Oncology Rehabilitation Services and Treatments

Oncology Rehabilitation services and treatments offered at Burke include:

Acupuncture: Patients can find relief from chronic pain with acupuncture. This traditional Chinese medicine healing technique is available by licensed acupuncturists at Burke. Acupuncture is known to reduce pain in some patients. Acupoints (specific anatomic sites on the body) are stimulated with the insertion of a fine needle into the skin. Based on some research, acupuncture may have positive effects on the body’s nervous, endocrine, immune, cardiovascular and digestive systems, and is now covered by many insurance policies.

Lymphedema management: The successful management of lymphedema can be life altering. Burke specialists will help to design a comprehensive and individualized treatment plan to decrease lymphedema, utilizing techniques such as manual massage and drainage, the use of compressions dressings and wraps, as well as utilization of pneumatic garments if indicated.

Generalized conditioning program: Conditioning and strengthening programs can be implemented for individuals at any stage of life and with any medical condition. Patients with cancer, including those who may be undergoing treatment, often require a specialized program to help them regain strength and endurance so that they can return to the level of independence and function to which they are able. Working closely with Burke's therapy team, our physicians will work with you to attain your goals.

Neuromuscular re-education, balance and gait training: The after effects of cancer or its treatment can be detrimental to the nervous system. Our trained experts will guide you through a program of rehabilitation aimed at re-training injured nerves and muscles with the ultimate goal of improving strength, function and safety.
