Our Patient-Centered, Nonsurgical Approach

We take a comprehensive, whole-person approach to your care and recovery, addressing not only your diagnosis, but also the underlying muscle and movement patterns that may be contributing to your pain. To learn more about your injury, your Burke doctor will evaluate you by taking a thorough history and by performing a physical examination.

Whenever possible, we emphasize nonsurgical treatments designed to promote healing while minimizing disruption to your daily life.

Conditions We Treat

Turn to Burke for diagnosis and treatment of:

  • Sports or performing arts-related injuries or pain
  • Painful conditions of joints (e.g. arthritis, rotator cuff impingement, patellofemoral syndrome, Achilles tendinosis, neck and back conditions)
  • Soft tissue injuries and overuse injuries (e.g., tendinitis, plantar fasciitis)
  • Peripheral nerve entrapment (e.g., carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome)
  • Posture and biomechanical evaluation relevant to specific sports activities

Nonsurgical Treatments

Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT)

Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) is a non-invasive treatment aimed at speeding up recovery from chronic musculoskeletal conditions. It uses high-intensity sound waves to target areas of injury, promoting the formation of new blood vessels and stimulating the body’s natural healing processes. This therapy helps reduce pain, improve tissue quality, and restore function in joints, tendons, and fascia, the connective tissue that supports muscles, bones, and organs.

ESWT is particularly effective for chronic musculoskeletal conditions such as osteoarthritis and various tendinopathies, including:

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Achilles tendinopathy
  • Lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow)
  • Patellar tendinopathy (jumper’s knee)
  • Calcific tendonitis of the shoulder

Treatments are usually conducted in an outpatient setting and typically consist of three to five sessions lasting 10 to 15 minutes each. The procedure requires no anesthesia, no incisions, and minimal downtime, allowing you to return to daily activities right away.

Joint Injections

Injections can deliver pain-relieving or healing substances directly to the site of an injury. Talk with your doctor about whether one of these options may be right for you:

  • Anesthetic – Provides temporary pain relief by numbing the area
  • Corticosteroid (cortisone) - Helps reduce inflammation, often providing relief for several weeks to months
  • Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) – Uses components from your own blood to support the body’s natural healing process
  • Hyaluronic acid - Uses substance similar to natural joint fluid and may help improve lubrication and reduce pain in osteoarthritis

Nerve Blocks

Nerve blocks stop nerves from sending pain signals to a certain area of the body. Your doctor injects an anesthetic or anti-inflammatory medicine, often under imaging guidance, to make sure the injection targets the right spot. You may feel pain relief for up to several months.

Ultrasound Imaging for Diagnosis

Your doctor may also perform ultrasound imaging during your office visit. The ultrasound creates pictures of the joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments and other tissues under your skin. This helps your doctor diagnose your condition. The doctor may order other tests as needed.

Physical Therapy

Your Burke physician may refer you to physical therapy as part of your overall treatment plan. Exercises, stretches, and hands-on techniques ease pain and restore range of motion. You’ll start by meeting one-on-one with a physical therapist to evaluate your symptoms and needs. Then, your therapist will make a custom plan to help you achieve your goals. You’ll visit your therapist for several weeks or months and learn techniques you can practice at home to improve your recovery. Your therapist will coordinate care with your doctor.

If surgery is needed, we will connect you with a trusted orthopedic surgeon. And if postsurgical rehabilitation is part of your recovery, our team will continue to support you every step of the way.
