Neurologic Music Therapy

Neurologic Music Therapy at Burke Rehabilitation

Based upon neuroscience research, The Burke Rehabilitation Neurologic Music Therapy Program provides specific, individualized, and standardized interventions for those affected by neurologic injury or disease.

Neurologic Music Therapy® (NMT) differs from traditional music therapy as it views music not as a social science model for well-being, but as a neuroscience model, where music is a hard-wired brain language. NMT is the therapeutic application of music to address cognitive, sensory, and motor dysfunctions due to neurologic disease or injury. Treatment techniques are based upon the scientific knowledge of the profound effects of music on the human brain.

NMT leverages music’s ability to activate widespread areas of the brain and then stimulate the brain’s ability to create or reconnect connections and pathways. This is critical in helping the brain recover function.

Our NMT Program Serves a Variety of Patients, and Focuses on three key goal areas:

Speech & Language:

    • Aphasia, Apraxia, Dysarthria and Voice Disorders

Sensorimotor:

    • Upper Extremity, Lower Extremity and Gait Training

Cognition:

  • Attention, Memory, Initiation, Executive Function and Neglect Training

Diagnoses that may benefit from NMT:

Burke Rehabilitation partners with MedRhythms Therapy to provide these services to our patients. During your inpatient stay, your interdisciplinary team can refer you for NMT.
