What’s a Concussion?
A concussion is an injury that usually occurs from a blow to the head or to the body that temporarily disrupts normal brain functioning. A concussion may or may not result in brief loss of consciousness (passing out).
Common Concussion Symptoms:
- Headache or "pressure" in head
- Nausea (with or without vomiting)
- Dizziness
- Imbalance
- Feeling tired or fatigued
- Difficulties with focus and concentration and/or memory
- Change in mood or personality
- Neck pain
What to Expect on Your Visit?
All patients seen in our concussion program are first evaluated by a physician trained in assessments and management of concussion. On your initial visit, you'll receive a comprehensive evaluation, including physical and neurological examination and detailed medical and personal history.
Depending on your personal symptoms and concerns, we also may refer you to other members of our multidisciplinary team. You may be given an appointment with one of our neuropsychologists for further assessment of cognitive, emotional and behavioral concerns and/or connected to an occupational or physical therapist to address symptoms such as dizziness, difficulties with balance and coordination , or headache.
Our team will collaborate to build a treatment plan individualized to your needs and guide you through the recovery process step by step to get you back to your daily life. We use current evidence-based guidelines to inform our care plans, including established return to play and return to school protocols for student athletes.
