Burke Rehabilitation Hospital to Host Seventh Annual Brain Bee Competition in White Plains
Know a high school student who dreams of becoming a brain surgeon or achieving a major breakthrough in neuroscience research? Invite them to sign up for the 7th annual Brain Bee competition, hosted by Burke Rehabilitation Hospital (785 Mamaroneck Ave. in White Plains) on Wednesday, February 28, 2018, at 4:30 p.m.
The Brain Bee is a not-for-profit neuroscience competition for high school students, designed to encourage them to learn more about the brain while also inspiring them to pursue careers in neurology and neurological research. Students in grades 9-12 will be quizzed by a distinguished panel of clinicians and therapists from Burke on a wide range of topics including human neuroanatomy, neuroscience, types of diagnoses and brain cell identification.
The winner of Burke’s Brain Bee will move on to compete in the national Brain Bee in Washington, D.C. The winner from the U.S. finals will have the chance to compete in the international championship in Berlin, Germany later this year.
Hosting the Brain Bee is just one of Burke’s initiatives geared toward fostering the next generation of elite neuroscientists. The hospital’s residency program and its 2-year neurorehabilitation fellowship are just a few other examples of how Burke remains committed to the future of neuroscience and its role in rehabilitative medicine.
“The Brain Bee is a great opportunity for budding neuroscientists to test their knowledge while also learning more about the brain and nervous system,” says Janet Goodman, LMSW, case manager for Burke’s Brain Injury Program and coordinator for the Brain Bee in Westchester. “These young women and men will be the future of neuroscience and this competition helps expose them to the profession and find out how they can be a part of helping discover cures for injuries and illnesses that affect millions of Americans.”
The event will be held in the Rosedale Conference Room of Building #4 on the Burke campus. Brain Bee competitors must be high school students (grades 9-12) in Westchester County.
