Burke Rehabilitation Hospital to Host Free Class on Post-Surgical Joint Replacement Rehabilitation Options

Released June 2, 2014

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – May 28, 2014 – In its continuing effort to provide relevant educational programs to the community, Burke Rehabilitation Hospital will host a free class on post joint replacement rehabilitation from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on June 11 in the Billings Building’s Rosedale Room on Burke’s main campus at 785 Mamaroneck Ave. in White Plains.

The goal of the class is to provide patients with a better understanding of what to expect after joint replacement surgery. It will feature a formal presentation by representatives from various areas at Burke, including patient screening, admitting, nursing, social work and the business office. The program directors from Burke’s Single Joint Replacement and Orthopedic Rehabilitation programs will also be available for a Question and Answer Session.

The program aims to provide patients with the knowledge necessary to make informed decisions as to what level of post surgical rehabilitation is appropriate for them, how to advocate for their choice of facility, and how to navigate through a complicated and ever-changing landscape of medical insurance and coverage.

“Patients often have questions about what to expect after their surgery and what types of rehabilitation are available to them,” says Denise Cronin, RN, director of Patient Screening at Burke. “Our team will outline the major levels of rehabilitation options available to patients and discuss how patients can choose the appropriate rehabilitation level for them. The class will also give patients information that can help them advocate for themselves post-surgery.”

Proper rehabilitation is imperative to successful recovery from joint replacement surgery. Understanding the measures that must be taken post-surgery allows the patient to arrange for this treatment and ensure an effective transition into recovery.

“Burke intends to not only make appropriate care available to patients, but also provide patients with a genuine understanding of what programs are offered and advised. In fact, all patients are encouraged to attend, regardless of where the patient chooses to receive rehabilitation following surgery. The class is beneficial to anyone who has questions at any level of treatment,” explains Richard Sgaglio, Ph.D., Burke’s director of Marketing & External Relations.

For more information about the Joint Replacement Rehabilitation class or to register, please call Burke’s Marketing Department at (914) 597-2848. Seating is limited and registrations will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis. Refreshments will be served and guided tours of Burke will be available immediately following the class.
