Burke Rehabilitation Hospital to Host 33rd Annual Wheelchair Games Sept. 22

Released August 20, 2012

WHITE PLAINS, NY – August 20, 2012 – Even with the Olympics behind us, it’s not too late to be part of an amazing and heartwarming athletic event. It’s once again time for Burke Rehabilitation Hospital to host its annual Wheelchair Games. The 33rdAnnual Wheelchair Games will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22. The event will be held on Burke’s main campus, 785 Mamaroneck Avenue in White Plains. This event permits disabled persons to compete in a variety of track, field and table tennis events. Known for therapeutic benefits, wheelchair sports also build strength, coordination, endurance and self-confidence. According to event co-chair, Tracey Bogart, “The wheelchair games have become a tradition for wheelchair athletes throughout the tri-state area and Burke is proud to continue to be the host for more than 30 years. Burke encourages members of the community to attend and cheer on the athletes, participate in the festivities and enjoy the sense of community the games create.”

More than 70 athletes of various age groups are expected to compete. Participants are grouped into four classes according to age and ability—a futures division for children ages six and younger; two junior divisions that cover ages seven through 22, split according to level of physical ability; and the adult/master division for ages 23 and up.

Field events include club, softball throw, javelin, shot put and discus. Track includes 20, 40, 60, 100, 400, 800, and 1,500 meter races and the slalom, an obstacle course. Helmets are required for track and slalom events. Table tennis is also a featured sport at the Wheelchair Games and is held concurrently with the track and field events.

There is a $25 registration fee for athletes, which includes lunch. (Note: The registration fee for athlete applications received before Sept. 1 is $20.) Financial assistance is available for those who cannot afford the registration fee as Burke encourages all athletes to participate in this event, regardless of their ability to pay. Admission is free for spectators and the general public. Along with the exciting athletic events, the Wheelchair Games also features carnival games, raffles and live entertainment from radio stations WFAS and WHUD. The stations will be doing a live broadcast from the event.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and athletes who have not participated before are asked to arrive 30 minutes prior to their scheduled event for classification. The games start promptly at 9 a.m. The awards ceremony will be held at the conclusion of the event at approximately 4:30 p.m.
