Burke Rehabilitation Hospital to Host Its Inaugural Brain Bee Competition
WHITE PLAINS, NY – December 19, 2011 – For the first time ever, the Burke Rehabilitation Hospital will be hosting one of the local Brain Bee competitions to be held in New York state on January 26th 2012. The local Brain Bee is the first qualifying round in the International Brain Bee competition, with the winners moving on to compete in the national Brain Bees, whose winners then move on to the international championship. The U.S. finals will be held March 3-4, 2012, in Baltimore, and the international championship will be held July 22-27, 2012, in Cape Town, South Africa. The International Brain Bee is an annual, not-for-profit neuroscience competition for high school students designed to encourage them to learn about the brain and inspire them to pursue careers in biomedical brain research.
“We need to support and nurture the next generation of scientists who will be finding the cure for the illnesses that devastate our loved ones and communities,” said Janet Goodman, LMSW, case manager for Burke’s Brain Injury Program and coordinator for the Brain Bee in White Plains.
The students will be judged by neuroscience experts and tested in five parts: a human neuroanatomy practical, an oral exam on neuroscience, a patient diagnosis, identification of specific brain cells and a written neuroscience exam.
Barry Jordan, MD, director of Burke’s Brain Injury Program and its Memory Evaluation and Treatment Service, and Carolin Dohle, MD, neurorehabilitation fellow at Burke, will be judging the competition.
The winners will receive the following scholarships:
$1000 for first prize;
$750 for second prize; and
$500 for third prize.
Additionally, the first prize winner will receive a $250 stipend to go to the National Brain Bee in March. There are also certificates of participation for all students.
The Brain Bee will be held at the Burke Rehabilitation Hospital at 4:30 p.m. on Jan. 26, 2012. For additional information or to become a contestant, contact Janet Goodman at (914) 597-2237 or via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
