New to our Somers Outpatient Clinic is the addition of The Schroth Method for scoliosis management. The Schroth Method is a three dimensional treatment approach for scoliosis management that involves cognitive, sensory-motor and kinesthetic (physical) training to assist in correcting scoliotic postures, stabilizing the spine, reducing pain and improving functional activities of daily living (ADLs) and self-image. Schroth is the premier treatment for conservative management of individuals with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), but can be adapted for adults with painful, degenerative scoliosis and for individuals with neuromuscular scoliosis alike.
Jill McDonald, a Burke licensed Physical Therapist, is a C1 certified Schroth therapist, who received her certification through the Barcelona Scoliosis Physical Therapy School. McDonald works at our Somers clinic, and is accepting patients for Schroth treatment on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturday mornings.
An initial evaluation will be 60 minutes long, and treatment sessions are 45 minutes of one-on-one intensive training with the therapist. It's a dynamic series of exercises that involve breathing and postural re-education through the developmental sequence of movement. For optimal results, patients receiving this treatment are asked to practice the method for 30 minutes a day on their own.
