At Burke, our staff is focused on patient-centered excellence, from our leadership to all of our physicians, nurses, and administrative staff. In this new column in the Burke Banner, you will hear from members of our leadership team. In this issue, you will hear from the President & CEO of Burke, Jeffrey Menkes. He reflected on his first six months at Burke and shared his vision for the future of the hospital.
1. You have been at Burke now for 6 months, what have you accomplished so far?
I was very pleased to find out how fantastic Burke’s dedicated staff is to providing outstanding rehabilitative care day in and day out. I am proud to take Burke to the next level as part of the Montefiore Health System.
The first task I undertook was to help make Burke the centerpiece acute rehabilitation center throughout the Montefiore Health System. We began to reinvest in our excellent workforce and capital programs. We are also improving the processes through which patients are referred from the Montefiore Health System and other providers, since we are uniquely the only inpatient rehabilitation hospital in Westchester.
We also began a process with the board of trustees to address Burke’s capital needs. These necessary campus enhancements will allow Burke to continue to increase the number of patients we can see and expand the services we provide. We have plans to increase the size of our on-campus outpatient facility, create an outpatient physician practice, add an interventional suite, and build a new neuro-rehabilitation gym. We have identified additional offsite locations where we will be opening new outpatient clinics in 2018.
2. What are you looking to accomplish in the future?
I am very excited to share that we are developing a caregiver center, creating an environment where patients and families can interact with Burke staff to address difficulties and issues patients will face when transitioning from an inpatient environment to another level of care. These patients may be moving home with home care, transitioning to another Burke outpatient facility, or going to a sub-acute environment.
I am gratified to say that we have accomplished a 3-year accreditation from the Joint Commission, and in June of 2018 we anticipate receiving a survey from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). We expect to do equally as well both in preparation and on the actual survey because of our dedicated and focused staff.
My long term vision for Burke is to modernize the inpatient areas, and to develop more of the rooms to be single patient rooms. I also want to introduce new services for the patient population who require a different level of care at the hospital. We want to ensure that our patients continue to receive the excellent, specialized care that they expect when coming to Burke.
We hope you enjoyed hearing from Burke President & CEO Mr. Menkes. In the next issue of the Burke Banner, you will hear from another member of our leadership team.
