Educational Breakfast on Safe Driving to Be Offered

Published July 7, 2016

Safe driving is an issue of crucial concern for seniors who want to maintain their independence, as well as the community as a whole.

Burke will host a program on “Staying Safe on the Road” for seniors on Thursday, July 14, 2016 at 9:00 a.m. at its main campus in White Plains (785 Mamaroneck Avenue).

The goal of this important program is to help seniors maintain their freedom while staying as safe as possible on the road. This lecture is the next installment in Burke’s Senior Health Series, a series of bi-monthly breakfast sessions for seniors in the community that cover topics such as fall prevention, how to make your home safer, diet and exercise and more.

Andrea Sullivan, OT/L, the outpatient occupational therapy supervisor, who runs Burke's Driver Evaluation Program will lead the discussion on what seniors can do to make sure that they and others are safe behind the wheel. She will review some tips and strategies that drivers can utilize, as well as examine options when driving is no longer possible.

This event is open to the public and community members are encouraged to attend and participate in the Q&A following the presentation. A light breakfast, coffee and tea will be provided. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the lecture begins at 9 a.m.

Since space is limited, pre-registration is recommended. To register, call Julia Moran at (914) 597-2848 or e-mail jmoran@burke.org The lecture will take place in the Billings Building (#4) on the 2nd floor in the Rosedale Room.

Want to learn more about Burke’s Driver Evaluation program? The program is for individuals with physical, visual or cognitive disabilities, including age-related deficits, who would like to start or resume driving. In the program, a licensed occupational therapist administers tests that measure necessary driving skills to determine if someone can drive safely. We currently offer this evaluation at our main campus as well as our Somers Satellite clinic.
