Burke has a robust adaptive sports program that encourages people of all abilities to take part in sports and exercise. Through our Therapeutic Recreation department, Burke offers several adaptive sports and fitness programs. These sports can be played by persons with a disability, including physical and intellectual disabilities.
The season kicked off last weekend with the Robie Pierce Regatta. From June 2 – 5, adaptive sailing took center stage at the Larchmont Yacht Club with the Robie Pierce One-Design Regatta and Robie Pierce Women’s Invitational. The event, which Burke sponsors, is named after Robie Pierce, a disabled sailor, who was an integral part of the sport and this year marked the 8th annual regatta and the 5th annual women’s invitational. The event had a great turnout, with sailors—some of whom were blind and others who had limited mobility due to a stroke or other neurodegenerative disease—from all over the region and the U.S. taking part. For photos from the event, visit Burke’s Facebook page.
Upcoming adaptive sports opportunities include:
First Swing Adaptive Golf Clinic, which takes place Friday, June 17th, 2016 from 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm at Burke. The clinics are for individuals with a disability, as well as golf professionals and recreational, physical, and occupational therapists. The First Swing Program is designed to train therapists and other rehabilitation team professionals to teach and encourage people with disabilities to learn or re-learn the game of golf.
The First Swing Adaptive Golf Clinics are designed to help participants learn how to overcome challenges with general golfing. The clinics teach the appropriate golf club grip, how to assume the proper stance and address ball set-up and balance. Elements of the seated and standing swing are taught, along with demonstrations of adaptive equipment.
To attend, email Dotto@burke.org for a registration form.
