While it might not feel like it this week, spring is here—and so is racing season. This year, Burke’s annual Heels & Wheels 5K and Kids Fun Run are set for May 1st, and athletes of all abilities—including runners, walkers and wheelchair athletes—are encouraged to take part in this great event.
The race starts and ends on Burke’s campus on Mamaroneck Ave. in White Plains and features 8 classes:
- 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place Runner Male and Runner Female, for ages:
- 1st, 2nd, 3rdPlace Racing Chair Male and Racing Chair Female
- 1st, 2nd, 3rd Place Hand Cycle Male and Hand Cycle Female
The Kids Fun Run, which is open to children between the ages of 4 and 12, will take place following the 5K. We will have three races and prizes will be awarded for each category:
- Ages 4-5: 100 yard dash
- Ages 6-8: 1/4 mile run
- Ages 9-12: 1/2 mile run
The fee for adults is $25 before April 25 and $30 after that. For kids under age 15, the fee is $10 before April 25 and $15 after that. Kids ages 4 and under are free. The registration fee includes an event t-shirt and numbered bib. Proceeds benefit Burke’s work providing quality rehabilitative care for patients.
The event is open to the public and community members are encouraged to attend and cheer on the runners.
Interested in volunteering? Volunteers are needed to help out at the event, in areas including: registration, bib/t-shirt handout, water station, traffic guide, after-race refreshments and more, with volunteers eligible to receive community service hours.
