Save the Date: Heels & Wheels 5K Road Race and Walk

Each year, Burke holds a Heels & Wheels 5K road race and walk. The event is open to all, enabling walkers, runners and wheelchair athletes to compete together in a fun race. This year’s event will be held on Sunday, October 19—and will begin and end at the Burke campus. 

The race will feature 8 classes:

  • 1st, 2nd, 3rd Place Runner Male & Runner Female in the following age categories: 13-18, 19-30, 31-40, 41-50, 51-60, 61+
  • 1st, 2nd , 3rd  Place Wheelchair Male & Wheelchair Female
  • 1st, 2nd, 3rd Place Hand Cycle Wheelchair Male & Hand Cycle Wheelchair Female

Note: All wheelchair participants must be able to self propel

There is a $25 fee for participants 16 years and older who pre-register and $30 after the pre-registration deadline of October 3. For children ages 4 to 15, the pre-registration fee is $10 and $15 after pre-registration and on race day. Children under 4 years old are free. The fee includes an event t-shirt and a numbered bib. Please no strollers on the race course.

The event is free for spectators and community members are encouraged to attend and support the participants.

Kids Fun Run
For the first time, following the Heels & Wheels 5K, there will be races for children on Burke’s track. The races are open to kids between the ages of 4 and 12. Bonus: Kids can wear their Halloween costumes to add to the fun!

The event will start at 11 a.m. Registration is from 7:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. The pre-registration fee is $10 before October 3 and $15 after pre-registration and on race day. All kids will receive a participation ribbon.

The event will consist of three races, and prizes will be awarded for each category.

    Ages 4 – 5:  100 yard dash

    Ages 6 – 8:   1/4 mile run

    Ages 9 – 12:  1/2 mile

Become a Heels & Wheels Volunteer
People can also participate by volunteering to help during the event. Like Burke’s annual Wheelchair Games, the Heels & Wheels race is produced entirely by volunteers, including Burke employees and people from the community.
