2013 Wheelchair Games and Heels & Wheels 5K Race Huge Successes

Scores of athletes from throughout the tri-state area came together on the Burke campus to take part in a day of competition and camaraderie during the 34th annual Wheelchair Games and 2013 Heels & Wheels 5K Race and Walk on Sept. 28. The athletes took part in various sporting events including table tennis, slalom obstacle course, track races and field events, as well as the 5-kilometer race.

Awards for the Wheelchair Games were given not for individual events but for age class. The following are the 2013 Wheelchair Games Award Winners:

  • Matt Tomaino — John Lombardi Memorial Award
  • Dana Parrott— Maureen Ryan Carr Spirit Award
  • Christian Santos — Best Novice (Male)
  • Dana Parrott — Best Novice (Female)
  • Isaac Sullivan— Best Junior (Male)
  • Stephanie Marquez — Best Junior (Female)
  • Paul Tudisco — Best Adult (Male)
  • Shaleena Tomassini — Best Adult (Female)
  • Vernita Paige — Best Master (Female)
  • Joseph Dowling — Best Senior Master (Male)
  • Stephanie Marquez — Best Field Athlete
  • Caitlin Goerlich —Best Table Tennis Athlete (Female)
  • Brian Cox — Best Slalom Athlete (Male)
  • Vernita Paige — Best Slalom Athlete (Female)

The fastest finishers from the nearly 100 Heels & Wheels Race participants are:


  • Male — John Benvin
  • Female — Tanya Mohatt

Junior Runner (15 & under)

  • Male — Nwanacho Nwana
  • Female — Emily Fitzsimmons


  • 1st Place — Carlos Quile
  • 2nd Place — Joseph Dowling

Hand Cycle Wheelchair

  • Kyle Jankowski

Motorized Wheelchair

  • Male — Mario Ojeda
  • Female — Khalida Sibiqui
