Physical therapists assist patients in becoming functionally independent and maximizing recovery following trauma or illness. Physical therapy may consist of muscle strengthening, endurance training, breathing retraining, improving flexibility, balance training, and functional-mobility skills training. Functional mobility includes getting in and out of bed, transferring to and from a wheelchair, mat, and bed, walking and going up and down stairs. Following a thorough and comprehensive evaluation of each patient, the therapist designs an individualized treatment program.
