Curriculum and Research for Burke Residents
Residency Program Curriculum
Burke Residents will follow a comprehensive curriculum training and education curriculum on our White Plains campus and at off-site locations.
Resident Education
The didactics curriculum is on an 18-month cycle and is organized in blocks by major physiatric topics with longitudinal training courses throughout the year. All essential PM&R topics for clinical practice and the Board Exam are covered. Residents have protected time (free from clinical duties) every Wednesday morning from 8:00 AM to 11:30 AM for didactics.
We hold monthly grand rounds lectures which feature speakers of different specialties and disciplines from within and outside of our department on new and exciting innovations in the field of rehabilitation.
Additionally, teaching takes place at our different rotation sites throughout the week through activities such as journal clubs, clinical case reviews, board review sessions, ultrasound scanning, hands on procedure practice, and rotation focused lectures from attendings, residents, and other members of the multidisciplinary team including therapists in the rehab gym.
Rehabilitation Training
During three years of training at Burke residents will complete 12 months of acute inpatient rehabilitation and 24 months of outpatient rehabilitation training (including 4 weeks of elective time).
Inpatient Rotations
The core inpatient rehabilitation rotations are located at Burke Rehabilitation Hospital. Burke is a free-standing 150-bed, comprehensive rehabilitation facility located in White Plains, NY. It specializes in rehabilitation of stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, orthopedic/amputee, and cardiopulmonary patients. Each program provides a continuum of rehabilitative care for inpatients and outpatients. Each program has a dedicated team of multidisciplinary rehabilitation professionals (rehabilitation nurses, physical, occupational and speech/language therapists, social workers, recreational therapists, etc.) who provide highly specialized and comprehensive rehabilitation management.

Research
Burke residents participate in research while completing their residency, and are encouraged to produce publishable research. We work closely with the research coordinator at Burke to provide structure and support for residents to start and finish research projects.
Burke residents have opportunities to present their research at national conferences and at Burke during our annual Research Day. Residents will also participate in a Quality Improvement (QI) Project and present at Burke, with the possibility of presenting at national meetings. Residents are supported and encouraged to publish their research in peer reviewed journals to further enhance their experience and for their career advancement.
