Examining Obstructive Sleep Apnea in Patients with Acquired Brain Disorders

Supported by the ResMed Foundation, and in collaboration with the Montefiore Sleep Medicine team, this project examines the prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and its impact on the recovery and rehabilitation outcomes among inpatients with acquired brain disorders. It will integrate sleep health into standard rehabilitation care, improving diagnosis, treatment and overall outcomes for patients with acquired brain disorders.

This project involves a two-step diagnostic approach using the STOP-BANG Questionnaire screening tool followed by the WatchPat®, a home sleep apnea testing device used to identify high-risk individuals. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) and sleep medication may be part of the follow-up post discharge. Project outcomes to be assessed include functional recovery, sleep quality, rehabilitation participation, length of stay, discharge disposition, and readmissions.
