Other Research Projects & Innovation
Improving Outcomes for Inpatients with Cancer
This study will help define how to best individualize care pathways for patients seen by our Cancer Rehabilitation specialists. Ultimately, this project will challenge existing biases that limit access to rehabilitation for these patients and will provide evidence-based guidance to improve functional outcomes, reduce avoidable transfers, and enhance quality of life. It will also help define key metrics for identifying which patients are most likely to benefit, advancing precision rehabilitation in oncologic care.
In-Hospital Hemodialysis Services
On-site Hemodialysis (HD) treatment services were initiated at Burke in March 2024, being the first and only free-standing rehabilitation hospital in New York State to offer on-site hemodialysis capabilities. Driven by the need to expand access to inpatient rehabilitation for this medically complex patient population, instead of transporting patients to infusion centers for HD, this program aims to improve physical and functional outcomes for patients needing HD during their stay.
CatchU – Your Post-Rehab Support App
CatchU is a health app designed to support you after rehabilitation. It monitors your movements and promotes safety during recovery. CatchU's goal is to help you stay strong, balanced, and confident as you continue healing at home. Supported by The Business Council of Westchester’s WIN program, the study showed CatchU is as accurate as traditional lab tests—making fall risk screening more accessible and affordable. Dr. Oh-Park says, “CatchU can help anyone in the community ‘catch’ individuals at risk of falls.” Burke is proud to lead the way in innovative, community-focused care!
CoFRIDA – Creating Art with Robotic Help
In partnership with Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotics Institute, we’re building something amazing: a robotic arm that helps people with difficulty moving or speaking create art. By sharing ideas through eye movements, gestures, or assistive technology, the robot turns people’s vision into a painting. This technology is available to anyone with physical or cognitive challenges who wants to express themselves creatively
