Burke CEO Looks Forward To The Year Ahead

January 3, 2018

Dear Community Members:

The beginning of the new year is the perfect time to look back and take measure of what we accomplished here at Burke in 2017 while also looking forward to an even better 2018.

After becoming president and CEO in April, my goal was to make Burke the centerpiece post-acute rehabilitation care center in the Montefiore Health System. We made strides to that end by making certain our rehabilitation services are offered 7 days a week, ensuring our patients’ needs are met every day of the year.

In November, Burke launched a new outpatient physician practice on its main campus in White Plains that provides expanded services while offering the same quality, compassionate care that Burke is known for.

Burke identified a huge gap in healthcare for patients who were discharged from an inpatient hospital stay, but still required follow-up specialty medical care.

These patients are now able to schedule appointments with board-certified Burke and Montefiore doctors for a variety of medical conditions requiring physical rehabilitation and specialty services in an outpatient setting.

I am pleased to say that in 2017 Burke received a 3-year accreditation from the Joint Commission, a nationally recognized organization that is the gold-standard in grading healthcare organizations and their commitment to safe, quality and effective care.

In June of 2018, we expect to receive a survey from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) for re-certification of many of our specialty programs such as stroke, spinal cord and traumatic brain injuries as well as certification for the hospital overall.

I am excited to announce the opening of The Marsal Caregiver Center in the spring. When a person experiences a life-changing illness or injury, it effects not only the patient, but their family, friends and support system as well. Now more than ever, we understand the importance of caring for the caregiver, in addition to the patient.

The Marsal Caregiver Center will be only the 12th such hospital-based center in the U.S., and the first of its kind in a rehabilitation hospital. We look forward to breaking ground on this new venture in January.

Burke has also identified offsite locations in Yonkers and the Bronx where we will be opening new outpatient clinics. In addition to our clinics, Burke has partnered with White Plains Hospital and St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh to bring our expert rehabilitative care to more patients in Westchester County and throughout the Hudson Valley.

Starting in January, Burke will begin offering services at the Shaffer Extended Care Center in New Rochelle as well.

We will continue to expand throughout our service area and reach our patients closer to home.

For all that has changed, much will—thankfully—remain the same. We will host our Heels and Wheels 5k Race on May 6th. Burke’s largest fundraiser—the Burke Award—will be held again on June 7th.  The 38th annual Wheelchair Games will be held on September 22nd.

Last, but not least, Burke will continue to offer the highest level of care for all of its patients.

May 2018 prove to be the best year yet. Here’s to good health and a happy new year.
