Message from Burke's CEO: A Look at the Year Ahead

January 10, 2017

Dear Community Members: I hope your new year is off to a wonderful start. 2016 was an exciting and eventful one for Burke.

Our status as a member of the Montefiore Health System began in January of 2016. This relationship now allows us to bring our high quality rehabilitation to more patients. It also continues our tradition of collaboration within the communities we serve.

In 2016, we also expanded our total number of neurological beds by 30. We are now able to serve more patients who have experienced life changing neurological conditions such as brain injury, stroke and spinal cord injury. We also added an additional outpatient satellite clinic in Armonk, bringing our total number of outpatient centers to seven. We’re now able to serve more patients in our outpatient division than ever before.

Burke also expanded its educational programs in 2016. We created and launched our first ACGME- approved Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Program, welcoming our first class of physician residents in July. We look forward to expanding this program in 2017 as we continue to help train the next generation of rehabilitation professionals.

In November, we launched Faces of Burke, our traveling photo gallery, which contains photos and stories of Burke patients who have all made remarkable recoveries. It has been housed in the Burke lobby for the past two months and moves to Ridge Hill in Yonkers on January 6, where it will stay for two months. It will continue to travel throughout the area in 2017.

As we look forward to the New Year, we have many wonderful events on the horizon for 2017.  We will once again host our Heels and Wheels 5k Race in May. And in June we will have our annual Burke Award, where we honor those who have made a significant impact in the field of medical rehabilitation.  It is also Burke’s largest fundraiser of the year. In September, we will host our annual Wheelchair Games for the 37th time.

This year will be an exciting one with many opportunities to engage with you, our friends, patients and neighbors. I wish you happiness, success and above all good health for 2017 and look forward to seeing you at a Burke event in the near future.
