What is a Stroke?

May 13, 2016

Did you know: someone in the U.S. has a stroke every 40 seconds? While that’s a sobering statistic, there is some good news: About 80% of strokes are preventable, according to the American Stroke Association.

Burke aims to educate the community on stroke prevention and staying healthy. But it's important to know what stroke is--and the signs to watch for in case someone you love is having a stroke. Here's a must-know overview:

In honor of Stroke Awareness Month in May, Burke is offering a free blood pressure screening to the community. It will be taking place in the Wood Lobby of Burke’s main hospital building (Building #7) on the White Plains campus on May 23 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

There, you’ll be able to have your blood pressure checked and speak with representatives from Burke’s stroke program on ways to keep yourself and your loved ones safe and healthy.

Learn more about Burke's New York inpatient stroke rehab program and find out about more events happening in the community on Burke's website.

Please complete the Community Health Needs Assessment Survey

Please follow this link or the QR code below to take a confidential 10-minute survey that asks questions about what you think are the most important health issues in our community and what matters to you most.

The CHNA survey results will inform the development of a plan, involving many community partners, to improve the health of our community. The survey is also important because its results can impact funding, spending, and other wide-reaching decisions about health care. Please tell your friends and family and encourage them to participate. Thank you for your time and for helping us gain valuable insights to respond to the needs of the community.
