What are you most excited about in your new role at Burke?
The most gratifying experience for me as a physician is seeing the progress in my patients. Burke has a strong interdisciplinary team, and I’m excited to work together to help patients reach their goals.
I’m also eager to see how we can expand Burke’s current offerings and exceptional programs. I’m looking forward to sharing insights on disorders of consciousness with our newer residents and clinical staff. I’m proud of my expertise in the management of patients with brain injury of all severities, disorders of consciousness, spasticity, and complementary medicine, such as acupuncture. I also have specific interests in areas including neurorehabilitation, traumatic brain injury rehabilitation, stroke rehabilitation, and brain cancer rehabilitation. We have a unique opportunity at Burke to expand within this field and provide patients with increased access to new solutions.
What makes Burke stand apart from other facilities where you have worked?
I love that Burke offers full spectrum brain injury care, which is not something that all facilities in the New York City/tri-state area provide. This breadth of services really allows me to practice at the top of my license, while also being able to do both inpatient and outpatient care, which I love. Thanks to Burke’s residency and fellowship programs, I’m also able to teach, an area that I’m passionate about.
How do you plan to contribute to Burke’s mission, vision, and values?
I really appreciate Burke’s focus on treating the whole person and providing care and compassion for patients. Here at Burke, we’re able to expand on Burke’s mission as our physicians bring a level of expertise that allows us to treat the full spectrum of patient needs and a holistic medicine approach. It’s all about making sure patients have access to the services that they need – specifically, access to procedures, therapies, and physicians who can provide the right type of care.
How would you describe your approach to medicine and rehabilitation care?
I think the most important thing is realizing that everything is changing, and we have to identify how to address problems with the latest research or embark on new research so we’re always practicing evidence-based medicine. Medicine and rehabilitation care is a field we don’t know enough about. There’s not enough research, not enough literature, and there are a lot of unknowns. The way I approach these unknowns is with a lot of curiosity, with a willingness to learn, recognizing that education never stops. We must continually redefine our paradigms and reexamine how we’re practicing, to ensure that we’re providing patients with the best possible care.
What are you most proud of professionally?
I am very proud of my involvement with the Master Spasticity Course at the National Conference for the Association of Academic Physiatrists (AAP). It’s an amazing group of physicians who have opened a lot of doors for me in terms of learning new procedures and making connections. I’ve lectured as part of the course twice, and it’s been a great learning opportunity. I’m excited to explore new ways of staying involved with this key group of leaders and bring in my colleagues through my new role at Burke.
What hobbies or weekend activities do you look forward to?
My mom is a very, very good cook. I take any chance I can get to learn from her, through cooking lessons together. I’ve learned a lot of traditional Indian dishes, which has been important to me because it allows me to really connect to my culture. I love that I’ll be able to keep the tradition of food alive for years to come because I think food brings people together – there’s something powerful in food itself.
