About Burke

Pioneering Rehabilitation

General Information

Burke Rehabilitation Hospital is a 150-bed acute rehabilitation hospital located in White Plains, New York. Burke is the only hospital in Westchester County entirely dedicated to rehabilitation medicine. Opened in 1915, Burke has been a leader in medical rehabilitation for nearly one hundred years.

Today, the Burke Rehabilitation Hospital is a free standing, acute care rehabilitation hospital and a leader in the field of medical rehabilitation. In 2016, Burke became a member of the Montefiore Health System, Inc.

Burke provides inpatient and outpatient care to patients with a broad range of neurological, musculoskeletal, cardiac, pulmonary disabilities caused by disease or injury. Burke treats patients who have suffered a stroke, spinal cord injury, brain injury, amputations, complicated orthopedic surgery, cardiac disease and pulmonary disease as well as neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s disease and Multiple Sclerosis. Most frequently, patients are transferred from acute care hospitals once their condition is stable and they are able to participate in intense physical, occupational and speech therapy.

All inpatients receive approximately three hours of physical, occupational and speech therapy per day, up to six days a week. Sub-acute rehabilitation facilities provide only one to two hours of therapy per day. Other medical professionals such as respiratory therapists, social workers, audiologists, psychologists, pharmacists, and dietitians are also an integral part of the Burke Rehabilitation team, working to ensure each patient makes the maximum gains during their stay at Burke. Additionally, recreational therapy, chaplains visits, patient green house activities, inter-generational therapy and family support groups are also available. These resources, coupled with intensive rehabilitation therapy, explain Burke’s national reputation for excellence and its consistent success helping patients achieve their maximum recovery.

Burke is both an acute rehabilitation hospital and research center. Burke’s doctors, nurses and therapists provide state-of-the-art treatment, while our physician researchers explore the frontiers of neurological and rehabilitation medicine. Patients admitted to Burke may have the opportunity to participate in cutting edge medical research when appropriate for ongoing studies happening at the hospital on stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, dementia, Alzheimer's disease and more.

Burke’s personalized care is the result of expert, interdisciplinary teams, which include a remarkable range of medical specialists. Burke employs full-time, highly respected physicians including neurologists, physiatrists, internists, rheumatologists, pulmonologists, and neurophysiologists. All share the Burke mission to ensure that every patient at Burke makes the fullest possible recovery from a debilitating illness or traumatic injury.
