The Burke Rehabilitation Hospital is a 150-bed acute rehabilitation hospital located in White Plains, New York. Burke is the only hospital in Westchester County entirely dedicated to rehabilitation medicine. Opened in 1915, Burke has been a leader in medical rehabilitation for nearly one hundred years.
Today, the Burke Rehabilitation Hospital is a free standing, private rehabilitation acute care rehabilitation hospital and a leader in the field of medical rehabilitation. Burke provides inpatient and outpatient care to patients with a broad range of neurological, musculoskeletal, cardiac, pulmonary disabilities caused by disease or injury. Burke treats patients who have suffered a stroke, spinal cord injury, brain injury, amputations, joint replacements, complicated fractures, cardiac disease, arthritis, and pulmonary disease as well as neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s disease and Multiple Sclerosis. Most frequently, patients are transferred from acute care hospitals once their condition is stable and they are able to participate in intense physical, occupational and speech therapy.
All inpatients receive approximately three hours of physical, occupational and speech therapy per day – up to six days a week. Sub acute rehabilitation facilities provide only one to two hours of therapy per day. Other medical professionals such as respiratory therapists; social workers, audiologists, psychologists, pharmacists, and dieticians are also an integral part of the Burke Rehabilitation team working to ensure each patient makes the maximum gains during their stay at Burke. Additionally, recreational therapy, chaplains visits, patient green house activities, intergenerational therapy, and family support groups are also available. These resources--and intensive rehabilitation therapy five to six days a week--explain Burke’s national reputation for excellence and its consistent success helping patients achieve their maximum recovery.
