Why is it that certain cognitive and motor faculties are so profoundly disrupted by neurological disorders, such as stroke?  Scientific research has taken long strides in answering this question.  For instance, it is clear that there are separate modules within the brain that process different aspects of experience.  My laboratory studies the cellular mechanisms by which the brain encodes cognition.  In technical terms, we study the rules by which neuronal ensembles encode experiences in a distributed manner.  We hope that by understanding these mechanisms we will develop optimal agents to help in the rehabilitation of lost function after stroke.
