Amputee Rehabilitation Program
The Amputee Rehabilitation Program helps restore confidence
and independence, and strives to maximize your recovery.
Under the direction of Karen Pechman, M.D., a specialist in
physical medicine and rehabilitation, a team of therapists,
nurses and counselors helps each patient increase strength,
coordination and endurance, and provides guidance and
support through periods of emotional adjustment.
Burke offers a two-phase amputee rehabilitation program which
begins immediately following surgery. The initial focus is on
strengthening muscles and increasing general cardiovascular
fitness and endurance. This phase also concentrates on
healing the limb, reducing swelling, preparing the limb for
a prosthesis, maintaining flexibility, improving strength, endurance
and range of motion, and assisting with pain control and
emotional support. Once an artificial limb is constructed and fitted,
patients return to Burke for intensive physical and occupational
therapy to ensure maximum mobility and independence completing
daily activities.
