Burke Rehabilitation Center to Host Third Annual Brain Bee Competition in White Plains

Released February 13, 2014

WHITE PLAINS, NY – February 13, 2014 -- Burke Rehabilitation Hospital will be hosting the 3nd annual local championship for the International Brain Bee  competition on Feb. 27. The International Brain Bee is an annual, not-for-profit neuroscience competition for high school students designed to encourage them to learn about the brain and inspire them to pursue careers in biomedical brain research.

The contest is open to all high school students in Westchester County. They will be judged by a distinguished panel of clinicians and therapists who will quiz the students on human neuroanatomy, neuroscience, types of diagnoses and brain cell identification. “The Brain Bee gives budding neuroscientists the opportunity to test their knowledge and further pique their interest in the brain and nervous system,” said Janet Goodman, LMSW, case manager for Burke’s Brain Injury Program and coordinator for the Brain Bee in Westchester. “We need to continue to encourage these young men and women who will be the next generation of scientists seeking cures for the disabling injuries and illnesses that affect millions of Americans.”

Local Brain Bees make up the first qualifying round in the International Brain Bee competition. The winners then move on to compete in the national Brain Bee — the location and dates of which are yet to be determined. The winner from the U.S. finals will go on to compete in the international championship to be held in Washington DC from Aug. 7 - 10.

The Westchester Brain Bee will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 27 in Burke’s Rosedale conference room, 785 Mamaroneck Ave., building 4, in White Plains. Students can prepare for the local Brain Bee by studying the 2012 edition of Brain Facts, published by The Society for Neuroscience. This publication is available as a free download.
