Burke Rehabilitation Hospital's Fitness Center to Offer Free Tai Chi Classes During December

Released November 7, 2011

The Burke Rehabilitation Hospital’s Fitness Center will host a series of free Tai Chi classes for the general public during the month of December. The classes are open to Burke Fitness Center members, students in the community, and the general public. The beginner classes are suitable for anyone who can stand and walk unassisted. This free series is aimed at offering the community an opportunity to try Tai Chi for free.  Tai Chi is sometimes described as "meditation in motion" because it promotes serenity through gentle movements — connecting the mind and body. Originally developed in ancient China for self-defense, Tai Chi has evolved into a form of exercise that's now used for stress reduction and to help with a variety of health conditions.

According to Heather Keeler, Director of Burke Rehabilitation Hospital’s Community Fitness Programs, “This is the perfect opportunity for those who have not tried Tai Chi to experience its benefits without any commitment or cost.”  “The holidays are a time when most people reduce their exercise and gain weight. This is a free program that can help people during the winter months,” she added.

The free classes are scheduled for December 12, 14, 16, and 19 at 11:00 am, December 13 and 14 at 7:30 pm, December 17that 10:00 am and December 21 at 7:30 pm. All classes are held at the Burke Fitness Center on the main campus of the Hospital in the Billings Building. Pre registration is required by phone or e-mail.
