In conjunction with Burke Rehabilitation Hospital’s 33rd annual Wheelchair Games on Sept. 22, Burke has reinstated the early morning Heels & Wheels 5K race that was part of the Wheelchair Games for many years. Having been dormant for the past seven years, organizers decided to reintroduce the Heels & Wheels event to allow both wheelchair- and non-wheelchair-using athletes to compete together. The other events being held later in the day are exclusively for wheelchair-using athletes.
The race will begin at the Burke campus entrance on the corner of Mamaroneck Avenue and Heatherbloom road. The racers will then follow a path down Mamaroneck Avenue, Bryant Avenue and around the Gedney area that surrounds the Burke campus. View the route map.
There is a $25 fee for participants, but financial aid may be possible for those who cannot afford the fee. The event is free for spectators. For more information, call (914) 597-2578. You may also register online at www.NYCRUNS.com.
People can also participate by volunteering to help during the event. Like the Wheelchair Games, the Heels & Wheels race is produced entirely by volunteers, including Burke employees and people from the community. If you would like to become part of this unique and worthwhile event, please download the volunteer form.
